David Rabinowitz grew up in Gloucester Township, NJ, where he attended Triton Regional High School and played clarinet. He had the opportunity to hear the high school jazz band and decided he wanted to become a member. When making an attempt to join the ensemble, his band director informed him that there were no clarinets in the jazz band and he would have to pick a different instrument. At that time, David decided to play Trombone where he immediately took a liking to the nature of the low brass instruments and the important role they play in an ensemble. In his junior year of high school, David’s band director tricked him into playing the tuba by offering him a solo in the marching band and thus the tuba player was born.
David received his Bachelor of Music Degree from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, NJ, where he studied Tuba Performance and Music Education. Shortly following his graduation from Rutgers in 2000, David moved to Chicago, IL where he attended Roosevelt University and received his Master’s Degree in Orchestral Studies in 2002.
David has had the opportunity to study Tuba with some of the best teachers and performers in the Country including Scott Mendoker of Rutgers University and the Philadelphia Brass, Charlie Schuchat of Roosevelt University, and Gene Pokorny of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
David has performed and recorded with many ensembles including the Garden State Pops Youth Orchestra in it’s inaugural season, the Rutgers University Wind Ensemble under the direction of Bill Berz, the Rutgers Brass Ensemble, Tuba Ensemble, Brass Quintet, and Youth Orchestra, the Roosevelt University Wind Ensemble and Orchestra under the direction of Dale Clevenger and Steven Squires, the Symphony of Oak Park and River Forrest under the direction of Jay Freidman, the Elmhurst Symphony, the South Orange Symphony, and the Raritan Valley Symphony Band
David is currently Principal BBb Bass Tuba of the Princeton Brass Band under the direction of Dr. Stephen Arthur Allen. He is Tubist for the Burlington County Musical Society’s Wind Ensemble under the direction of John Pastin, and a member of the SJAWE’s wonderful Low Brass section, a seat he has occupied since 2005.
Aside from his playing responsibilities, David Rabinowitz is an instrumental music teacher for the Medford Township Public Schools where he teaches 4th and 5th grade band. He is an assistant band director for the award winning Delran High School Marching Band where he is on staff as the Brass Instrumental Tech and Music Tech. His career in music has given him the opportunity to arrange small ensemble pieces for his students in Medford and in Delran.
David comes from a talented family of musicians and artists and feels very fortunate that he has had the opportunity to share the arts he has learned with others. |
