ABOUT US
The South Jersey Area Wind Ensemble (SJAWE) is a 75-member community concert band composed of professional musicians, current and retired music educators, and dedicated musicians who have continued their musical journey beyond their college and professional careers. The ensemble is committed to performing quality wind band literature at a high level while providing opportunities for musicians throughout the South Jersey region to continue making music throughout their lives.
Founded in March 1997, SJAWE has commissioned fifteen original compositions and participated in two collaborative consortiums. In 2006, the ensemble was honored with the John Philip Sousa Foundation’s Sudler Silver Scroll Award, recognizing outstanding community bands in the United States. SJAWE has been featured at the New Jersey Music Educators Association (NJMEA) Conference three times and has performed at the Association of Concert Bands National Convention in Allentown, Pennsylvania; Longwood Gardens; the Temple International Festival; and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as part of the Sousa Festival.
For thirty years, SJAWE has remained dedicated to artistic excellence, quality music-making, education, and community engagement while providing musicians of all backgrounds with the opportunity to make music last a lifetime.
The SJAWE makes its home at Atlantic County Vocational Institute (ACIT) in Mays Landing, NJ.
Rehearsals are held from 7:00-9:15 pm every Monday from September - June except holidays.
